SAFE SANCTUARIES TRAINING

SAFE SANCTUARIES
The General Conference of the United Methodist Church, in April 1996, adopted a resolution aimed at reducing the risk of child abuse in the church.  Our congregation's purpose for establishing the Safe Sanctuaries policy and procedures was to demonstrate our absolute and unwavering commitment to the physical safety and spiritual growth of all of our children and to protect our staff and volunteers from potential allegations of abuse.

A few of the basic guidelines:
  • Leaders working with children must regularly attend FUMC for 6 months before they are eligible to begin a direct contact position.
  • All activities should occur in open view.
  • Adults wishing to be involved with children's' programs must go through training, a criminal background check, and a reference check.
  • When transporting children, a driver must have proof of insurance, a valid driver's license, and no serious moving violations in the past 5 years.
  • Whenever reasonable, the two-adult rule will require that no fewer than 2 Safe Sanctuary trained unrelated adults be present at all times during any church-sponsored program, event, or ministry involving children.

If anyone is interested in the training to be a Safe Sanctuary volunteer, please contact Sandy Ward at sandyward@faithumcop.org.

Scheduled training for church members wishing to work with youth during Vacation Bible School (VBS), Sunday School, or the Athletic Committee. Must be a minimum of 18 years old and a member of the church for at least 6 months.
